Colby College is an American private liberal arts college located in Waterville, which is a city in the US state of Maine, in Kennebec County, with a population estimated at a number of over 15 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Colby was established in 1813, as a Baptis college, its original name being Maine Literary and Theological Institution. The school got its current name from Gardner Colby, a Boston merchant, prominent Baptist philanthropist, and Maine native, who gave a large donation that allowed the college to remain open during the Civil War, when the institution was on the verge of closing, due to many students leaving to fight the war.
The college currently offers its students 52 major fields, as well as a wide flexibility in designing independent study programs, electing special majors, and participating in internships and study-abroad programs.
Colby's athletic teams are known as the Mules and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are royal blue and Priscilla grey, and their mascot is the White Mule.
Among Colby's famous alumni, there are also: Tom Silverman - founder of influential hip-hop record label Tommy Boy Records, Robert Diamond - CEO of Barclays Capital, and Chairman of Barclays Global Investors, E. Annie Proulx - Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Shipping News and Brokeback Mountain, Billy Bush - TV personality and nephew of President George H. W. Bush, and Alan Taylor - noted scholar in early Colonial America history and Pulitzer Prize winner.
